It's a long story, but DuPont™ Sorona® will probably be the next, best, greatest carpet fiber ever made. Currently, Miami Carpet and Tile has over 150 styles of carpet made from DuPont™ Sorona® and they represent many of our best selling carpet fabrics
at affordable prices.
- DuPont began making nylon in 1947 and from that time on, the carpet industry was never the same. Nylon replaced wool in carpet (because it was more economical and easier to produce) and it was a vast improvement over other synthetic carpet fibers which crushed, attracted dirt and matted rapidly. In 1986 Dupont Stainmaster® was introduced. After the introduction of nylon, it was the second biggest event to impact the carpet industry. Stainmaster was the breakthrough in carpet stain protection. While no carpet is stain-proof, the process made carpet nearly stain proof, the results were nothing short of spectacular.
- In May 2004, DuPont spun off their carpet fiber division to Koch Industries. Along with this divestiture went the Stainmaster brand name. Invista, a Koch Industries subsidiary, now owns the Stainmaster carpet brand name. The product remains the same, only the DuPont name was dropped.
- In 2006, Dupont registered their patent for "SORONA". The first new carpet fiber introduction in over 50 years. The big breakthrough - It wears better, it cleans better, it's more environmentally friendly than previous produced carpet fibers. Once the fiber was created, DuPont then made a business decision to become partners with Mohawk Carpet (and its affililate - Karastan Carpet) and gave sole use of the carpet fiber to them until an unspecified time in the future. Today, Mohawk Industry using its DuPont™ Sorona® carpet fibers has confirmed all the initial test results and soon will be their top performing and selling carpet fiber.
- In December 2011, Smart Strand Silk was introduced into the Mohawk and Karastan systems. This new fiber takes softness to a new level. While every bit as durable and high performing as the existing Smart Strand products, the fiber is the softest sensation ever created for residential use in flooring. In fact, Smart Strand - Silk products are even guaranteed againt pet stains including feces and urine.

The superior stain resistance of SmartStrand® carpet is engineered into the fiber and will never wear or wash off, meaning consumers will never need to retreat the carpet with stain protectors after steam cleaning. And this engineered-in stain resistance reaches new levels of protection, allowing tough stains such as mustard, red wine and cherry Kool-Aid® to be removed simply with warm water and a mild detergent.
By utilizing corn sugar in the production of the fiber, 37 percent of Sorona® is being made from renewable resources. This marks the first time that a luxuriously soft carpet offers durability and stain protection, while also making less of an environmental impact.
