What padding should I use ...
Carpet cushion adds comfort and life to your carpet.

Carpet cushioning performs several important functions, and you should consider it an integral part of every carpet purchase.

  • Properly installed carpet cushion can add 17% to 50% to a carpet's useful life.
  • Padding cushions up to 90% of the impact of foot traffic.
  • Padding protects the pile against crushing and protects the backing.
  • Padding creates a more comfortable walking surface.
Rubber or urethane foam, rubber waffle (for use in the north) and various felt pads are most commonly used. Most are offered in several thicknesses. Rebound pads (or composition) are made from scraps of prime urethane. The glue holds the pad together. Often salvage pieces of materials in the padding will cause lumps of bumps to be felt under the carpet.

A 3/8 thickness is usually the best place to start. Thin pads can tear, wear or disintegrate too quickly. Thicker pads on the other hand, can be too soft for comfortable walking and balance. If the padding is higher than the tackstrip, a trampoline effect occurs where the carpet will bounce off the tackstrip and cause waviness in the carpet.

Check for the padding guarantees. Don't settle for any that will not guarantee a consistent feel for the life of the carpet.
