How Do I Clean Stains... No carpet is stain proof, although many are treated to be stain resistant, giving you time to act. Immediately after a stain or spill occurs, absorb as much liquid as possible with paper towels, etc., replacing as they become saturated. Use a blotting action, never a scrubbing motion to prevent fuzzing the carpet surface. Try to categorize the spot; then treat according to the following spot removal guide. B. Scrape up all the solids using a spoon or dull spatula. C. Blot up excess liquids using an abosrbent white cloth or paper towel.DO NOT RUB. D. Test for color fastness on an inconspicuous part of the carpet before applying carpet shampoo or chemicals. E. Do not apply liquid directly onto the carpet but instead pour the cleaning chemical onto the cloth and blot. F. Repeat blotting action until no more of the spot if deposited onto the cloth before going to the next step. G. Work from the edge of the spot inward to prevent spreading of the spot. H. Rinse the treated area with clean water afterwards, and place weighted paper towels until dry. I. Avoid walking on the area, until completely dry. Type of Treament: You will need the following items for spot cleaning. The numbers are keyed to the stain, and all should be used in the recommended sequence. Some stains many require professional cleaning based on the age of the stain. 1. Cold Water. 2. Detergent solution. Mix one teaspoon of clear dishwashing liquid with a cup of warm (not hot) water. 3. Ammonia solution. Mix one tablespoon of clear household ammonia (3% solution) with 1/2 cup of water. 4. Solvent. A dry cleaning solvent (available at grocery, drug, and hardware stores) such as Carbona or Energine. 5. Ice. Chill with ice cubes in a plastic bag. Shatter residue, pick or scrape off and vacuum. 6. Vinegar Solution. Mix 1/3 cup of white vinegar with 2/3 cup of water. 7. Warm water. (not hot) 8. Clear nail polish remover. (preferably acetone) 9. Alcohol or methylated spirits mineral turpentine. 10. Rust remover. 11. Absorbent powder. (e.g. salt, talc or proprietary absorbent powders.) 12. Absorbent cleaner.
